Movie Review – The Resident (2011)

resident_xlgI watched this movie ages ago and meant to write up a review but never got around to it for some reason.

To be honest, the movie didn’t make that much of an impact after watching it, which is too bad because I’d been looking forward to it.  I’d seen the trailer when it was first released and thought it would look like a smart psychological thriller.

I was unfortunately disappointed.

Hammer Films, which was previously known for it’s schlocky horror movies over the years as well as well-loved classics like Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Mummy, has seen a resurgence in the past half dozen years.  Their most notable titles recently have been The Woman in Black (2012) and Let Me In (2010).

Hammer Films, also known as Hammer Film Productions, is a British film and television production company based in London, United Kingdom.

Founded in 1934 it is one of the oldest still active British film production companies. Its success was largely built on the back of The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) which is thought to be the origin of British Horror, and is widely regarded as one of the most important horror films of all time. [1]

Although Hammer is most notably associated with horror, productions have varied from noir to sci-fi, drama and black comedy, and it has produced television series and single dramas, as well as feature films. (Source: Wikipedia)

This film stars Hilary Swank as a city doctor finding a place of her own after a breakup with her partner, and eventually rents a huge (and financially unrealistic) apartment from hottie landlord Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

When a young doctor suspects she may not be alone in her new Brooklyn loft, she learns that her landlord has formed a frightening obsession with her. (Source: IMDb)

RESIDENT, THEThe film also stars the brilliant but barely used Christopher Lee as Morgan’s sick uncle who comes across as super creepy from the start.  Of course Lee is no stranger to Hammer Films, as he famously portrayed Count Dracula in Horror of Dracula (1958).  He was obviously cast in  The Resident as a link to the classic horror era, as well as his acting abilities of course.

Now I was hoping this film would work, especially since I’ve enjoyed both the lead actors in their previous roles and they were terrific together in P.S. I Love You (I know, a completely different genre of film, but was still enjoyable).  The entire film just seemed awkward and there didn’t seem to be much chemistry between them.. especially in the scenes when there’s supposed to be something between them.

As for the movie itself, the plot was fairly straight forward and not exactly ground breaking.  Sure there were a few startling moments, especially when Swank’s watching some motion-activated camera recordings, but overall most of the movie was dark and hard to watch.  I know they were trying for a creepy ambiance and all, but it just made it hard to see what was actually happening.

Overall I personally wouldn’t rush to go watch this movie, but if you’re looking for something simple, easy to watch without the scares or thrills promised in the below trailer, then have at it.

But I wouldn’t waste money on it though..

All American Boy – Steve Grand

In honor of Independence Day in the US, I give you Steve Grand.

Steve GrandProbably the first openly gay COUNTRY singer.

His first ever single ‘All American Boy’ (released today on Independence Day) depicts how he falls in love with his best friend, only for his friend to reject his advances after a kiss while skinny-dipping drunk.  A typical story of unrequited love where the object of his affection only wants to stay friends.

All on the 4th of July of course. 😀

It’s an alright song, and he’s got a decent voice (I’m not a country fan personally..).  And oh my yes, he’s got a killer set of abs and lovely muscular arms.  There’s some definite eye-candy in the video below.  Hehe

Steve writes of his decision to make the video:

“I fought with who I was for most of my life. In every way a young person can fight with himself. But starting today… I’m laying it out there. I’m done playing it safe.”

grand-2 Good for him I say.  He’s being open and honest about who he is to ensure his fans get to know the real him.  And it also allows him to write music that is more encompassing to what is happening around him.

He further writes (I believe it was on Twitter):

“time to be brave. the world does not see change until it sees honesty. I am taking a risk here in many ways, but really there is no choice but to be brave. To not tell this story is to let my soul die. It is all I believe in. It is all I hold dear. We have all longed for someone we can never have… we all have felt that ache for our ‎#allamericanboy

first original song and music video. I gave everything for this. If my story makes even a couple people feel less alone in their aching, all the blood, sweat, tears, and soul I put into this project makes it worth it. Thanks for watching.”

What surprised me as I read about Steve is how he hasn’t gone down the usual studio, manager, label route.  In fact he has none of those things, and funded the video/record solely on his tip money from playing piano.grand-6

Hopefully as more people see this video and see how talented he is, and how marketable a hot gay country singer could be, he’ll be picked up in no time.  At least that’s my hope for him and that he finds success with his music going forward.

Enjoy the video.. and Happy Independence Day to all our American friends.  🙂

Love Somebody – Maroon 5

Adam Levine02Ahhh.. don’t know about you guys, but I’m always up for a bit of Adam Levine shirtlessness. 🙂

In Maroon 5‘s latest video, Levine (and the rest of the band… though no clue what the rest of them look like..) is shown sparingly through slashes of body paint.

It’s a cool video with an interesting concept.. The song’s alright as well, though dunno how catchy it is compared some of their past singles.

Of course half an hour after watching the video, the song’s chorus is still stuck in my head, so that’s a good sign I think. lol

It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that he’s got his shirt off in the video.  He seems to do that at any opportunity he can, along with pretty much the rest of his clothes.

And that’s definitely NOT a bad thing. 😉

Back in 2011, Levine did an infamous photo shoot for Cosmopolitan UK to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancer.  The picture (see above) definitely got people’s attention as Levine stands completely nude with nothing but a woman’s hands covering his privates.

“I spend most of my life naked,” Levine explained to the magazine. “In fact, I often have to be told by the people around me that it’s inappropriate to be as naked as I am. But I live in California, where it’s always warm, so why not?”

But I think what I also like about this guy, other than he seems to come across as a pretty cool guy (if you’ve watched The Voice, you’ll know what I mean), but he’s also a huge advocate for gay rights since his brother is openly gay.  He discussed in several interviews, most notably in Out Magazine, how the family knew from a young age his brother Michael was gay, and how they embraced it from the beginning to ensure he knew he was loved and that he was ok.

Sound like a great, loving and accepting family to me.

adam levine - motorcycle

Ahh to be his helmet 😉

Here’s Maroon 5’s latest video ‘Love Somebody’.

Enjoy. 🙂

Much Ado About Nothing – Official Trailer (2013)

Much Ado about NothingNow this is an intriguing adaptation, by none other than Joss Whedon.

That’s right.  The creator of  Buffy the Vampire Slayer (both original movie and tv series) and director of Marvel’s The Avengers is tackling William Shakespeare.

This version of Much Ado About Nothing is set in modern times.. or as IMDb describes it:

A modern retelling of Shakespeare’s classic comedy about two pairs of lovers with different takes on romance and a way with words.

Not surprisingly, Whedon has populated this film with some of his regulars – Nathan Fillion (Buffy & Firefly), Alexis Denisof (Buffy, Angel, & Dollhouse), and Clark Gregg (Avengers and the upcoming Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) … just to name a few.

But that’s not a criticism at all.  These actors definitely fit into this film, per the trailer below.  It looks fast-paced, fun, sexy, and thoroughly enjoyable.

Upon first viewing of the trailer I was like ‘what??’.. but then once you get used to the feel of the clip, it kinda works.

It’ll be interesting to see how this film does when it arrives in theaters early to mid June 2013.

The Leibster Award – Discover New Blogs!

liebsterawardSo.. an interesting thing happened last week.  I was nominated for an online blogging award (Liebster Award) not once.. but twice in the same number of days.

This was first by Ivan’s Blog World ( and then by Techno Bullet (… both of whom were nominated for the award by the same blog.

Thank you both so much for this.  Please do take a moment to check out their sites as well.

Looking into it, the Liebster Award seems to be a viral blogging ‘award’ started back in 2010 or so as a way to highlight fellow bloggers the nominator feels should get a bit more notice.  There’s no actual award or anything, but more the knowledge that someone connected enough with what you’ve written to give you some extra notice.

So.. here are the rules:

  • Thank the Liebster Blog presenter who nominated you and link back to their blog.
  • Post 11 facts about yourself, answer the 11 questions you were asked and create 11 questions for your nominees.
  • Nominate 11 blogs who you feel deserve to be noticed and leave a comment on their blog letting them know they have been chosen (this varies from 5 to 11 depending on who’s blog you read).
  • Display the Liebster Award logo.
  • No tag back.

  7. I’ve had the same iPod for about 7 or 8 years now.. we’re talking like original 1st or 2nd Generation iPod, and it still works amazingly.
  8. The only sport I truly enjoy is Bowling.. probably because it’s socially acceptable to drink while doing it.

Answers to the questions from my nominator

Since there were two different nominations I tossed a coin to see who’s questions I’d answer..

  1. If you could be anybody you want, who would it be and why?  A famous author like Steven King or Anne Rice, as I think they have fantastic imaginations and I can only dream of their success.
  2. Why do you blog?  It’s an outlet for me.. years ago I used to keep a journal as a way to better work through many conflicting emotions or events going on in my life, and it was a bit like therapy for me.  Blogging has evolved from that over the years for me to what it is today.. and it’s continue to evolve as I move forward.
  3. Do you do something while you blog?(watching T.V,ect).  Sometimes I listen to music, but not always.  Does wearing my glasses count?
  4. Which sports do you like? And why?  Bowling as mentioned above.  Though I do like checking out the sexy guys in their Rugby shorts (though never watched any actual matches myself lol).
  5. What was the worst moment of your life?(you don’t have to answer it if you don’t want to)  Think I’ll have to come back to this one…
  6. What computer do you use? why?  I have a Samsung laptop that I bought last summer.. it’s a killer machine, though I still miss my ancient iMac sometimes (it died a couple months ago).
  7. Why did you chose WordPress?  A former colleague told me about it and suggested it as a platform I could use for my writing.  I’d taken a look at a couple other sites, but WordPress just seemed to fit for me.
  8. Who is your blogging idol?  I’d have to say Dan at Single Dad Laughing .. it’s one of my favorite blogs, and the success he’s had with it is amazing.
  9. What do you think about all those stupid updates on Facebook?  It’s Facebook, it’s always changing and evolving.  I actually thinks it’s funny how people complain and try to get them to change things back before the update.. but then a couple months later, they’re used to it and don’t remember why they were complaining to begin with.
  10. What thing/person has annoyed you the most?  Oh man, where do I start!! I’d have to say people who don’t consider others around them before doing things like playing music or having a party.. especially those people they live with.
  11. If you and your friend were about to die, would you die together or separately?  How morbid is that? LOL  Together as long as we were pissed and having a few laughs.

People who I’ve nominated

My questions

  1. If you could be anybody you wanted, who would it be and why?
  2. What do you enjoy most about blogging, and how does it make you feel?
  3. What’s your writing ritual, if you have one?
  4. What is your favorite thing in the world to watch on TV/live?
  5. What was the best moment of your life?
  6. Which is your favorite picnic/relaxing/refreshing spot?
  7. What blogging platform do you use?  Did you try any other platforms before deciding on this one?
  8. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
  9. What is the one thing on your bucket list you absolutely must do before you die?
  10. What thing/person has annoyed you the most?
  11. What is your prized possession?  What makes it so special?

Right.. so that’s that.  A bit more long-winded than I thought it would be, but definitely worth it.  Thanks again to Ivan and Will for the nominations.

Happy Blogging 😀

Elysium – Official Trailer

elysium-poster2Now this movie is one I’m definitely looking forward to this summer.  And it’s very cool to see Matt Damon going all bad-ass action hero in this Sci-Fi flick..

Not to mention Jodie Foster looking cool as a cucumber on the other side of the battle.  Plus it’s so rare to see her pop up in any kind of big-budget movie these days so that’s an added bonus since she can act the pants off of anything thrown at her.

So I definitely have my fingers crossed that this movie is as good as the preview makes it out to be.

Here’s the IMDb description of the movie:

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes, a government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

But of course, we all know what it’s like with these ‘blockbusters’ – they get promoted to an inch of their lives, to the point where everyone is almost sick to death of hearing about the movie.. then when it comes out, it does well the first weekend, but is a critical bomb and goes the way of Battlefield Earth‘.

Fingers crossed this one is one of those exceptions that is actually good and enjoyable.

Release dates:

  • USA – 9 August 2013
  • UK & Ireland – 20 September 2013

Free Your Mind – En Vogue

envogue311x233_thumbAhh the 90’s.  I definitely have some fond – and not so fond – memories of that decade.

Can you believe this song by En Vogue, probably one of their biggest hits, was released way back in 1992?  Doesn’t seem like it was that long ago does it?

Back in ’92, I was finishing high school and starting college.. and still learning who I was as a person.

Hell I think I still am. LOL

But I recall hearing this song and thinking it was absolutely amazing.  I felt it had a fantastic message to empower women while helping break down the barriers of prejudice and ignorance.

Think this song is still relevant today in many ways..

Enjoy 🙂

Les Farfadais – Fountain Dance

FarfadaisA friend sent me this YouTube link the other day.. and it’s pretty cool, and hot.. and sexy.

It’s from a French dance troupe called “Les Farfadais”.

When I initially started to watch it, I thought they were actually naked.  LOL  Then I realised after a bit that they were just wearing little skin-coloured briefs.   Still works for me 😉

Enjoy 😉

Miracle – Hurts

I was recently introduced to this band Hurts and I have to say I quite like them.

As my mate and I were discussing, they seem to be a mix of a variety of artists and genres, only they’ve pulled it all together into their own sound.

Hurts-band-happiness-revi-006They really remind me a bit of Depeche Mode, while my mate thought they had aspects of MUSE and a darker Pet Shop Boys in their music.

Regardless of their influences, they have a good sound and the more I listen to them, the more I like them.

It’s a bit of a modern version of a throwback sound, if that makes sense to anyone.  Haha

Their new album ‘Exile‘ is due to be released on March 11th, which the song below will be their lead single (I think..).

Also on their website (, you can get a free download of their song ‘Sandman‘, which will also feature on their new album.

Enjoy 😉

Movie Review Double: Due Date (2010) & Identity Thief (2013)

Trust me when I say this is one ‘double feature’ you won’t lose sleep over by missing it.

Truth be told, other than some plot-lines, they’re basically the same freakin’ movie.  That’s right, once again Hollywood is just rehashing the same tired formulas over and over again.

planes-trainsAnd neither one is anywhere near as good as ‘Planes, Trains & Automobiles‘ – the ultimate buddy-road trip movie if you ask me.

It was totally coincidental that I watched these two movies within a few days of each other. With both of them I just wanted to watch something easy and that didn’t need me to think that much.

Too bad I hadn’t thought to watch something entertaining as well. 😉

Oh and you know the sad part?  I’ve actually watched ‘Due Date‘ before, but had totally forgot that I’d seen it.  Hahaha  It obviously wasn’t that memorable the first time around, or maybe I’d thought it was so bad I tried to block it from my memory.  lol

Ok, so here’s the general premise of both movies:

Due Date Banner PosterDue Date – Thanks to a misunderstanding on an airplane home, the straight-laced character (Robert Downey Jr.) agrees to drive cross-country with the somewhat annoying person (Zach Galifianakis) despite him being the cause of both of them not being able to fly.

Plot device The straight-man (no pun intended) is just trying to get home to see his pregnant wife give birth to their first child.

identity-thief-uk-quad-poster-630x350-622x345Identity Thief – The straight-laced character (Jason Bateman) agrees to drive cross-country with the somewhat annoying person (Melissa McCarthy) who has stolen his identity, so they wouldn’t be able to board an airplane with the same name because of that.

Plot device – The straight-man is just trying to get home to save his job to ensure he can provide for his pregnant wife (again!) and two other children.

Not really that much different if you ask me.  In both movies, the straight-laced character gets beaten up, handcuffed/arrested, and ends up a bloody mess.. and eventually comes to respect the annoying person they’re traveling with, accepting them into their respective families.

It’s really too bad that neither of these movies worked.  I like most of the main actors in both movies (don’t get the appeal of Zach Galifianakis personally, but to each their own..), and I could see where each movie could potentially be really funny.

So black is idea 'A', white idea 'B', and a bullseye is a remake of something that was already good to begin with.

Bulls-eye! Let’s just remake something that was good to begin with!

But alas, they both followed a tired formula where each character comes to respect the other, or shows their heart of gold.. or whatever other plot devise the ‘writers’ decided to toss in by throwing darts at a board with ideas on it.

That is how they write this kind of movie, right?

So instead.. I recommend reading a good book.  😀

If not, why not revisit some classic 80’s comedy .. maybe ‘Planes, Trains & Automobiles‘ perhaps?

Here’s the trailer, just in case you were interested… 😉
